Obama's Speech at the United Nations

Did anyone catch Obama's address to the UN. The speech was focused around the problems with nuclear weapons, and passing policies pertaining to such. I thought he made some really interesting points. One point that Obama made was how for years countries have scrutinized the United States for the power they hold and there self dominance over other countries. Obama challenged them by pointing out how they wanted the power and now they have it. He said it is going to take all of the countries coming together to address this problem, so they need to step up. It was interesting to me that Obama came out and point blankly made that point. Many other presidents have avoided discussing this type of matter and I applaud Obama for his honesty. What kind of thought do you have if you saw the debate?

  1. Sadly, the only UN speech I saw was the SNL spoof of Kadhafi last night.... The US is still working through its "We'll go it alone, then!" moment in 2004. Even if Obama is right as far as needing to come together to help rebuild Afghanistan, America's refusal to sort out Iraq through bodies such as the UN now make the mission in Afghanistan much more difficult. The UN has always had as much power as the powerful countries within it cede to it. In terms of Iraq in 2004, it didn't seem to matter one iota to the Bush Administration--or rather, being with him was preferable (remember Powell's speech? Damn!), but dissent wasn't going to stop him.

Part of the joy of cultural diversity is that assertions of our way or the highway (with us or with the terrorists) just does not play. And folks remember.

  2. Sorry--the Iraq invasion was Spring 2003, I believe.
