Wow. Did anyone catch the New York Times this moring or the news? Apparently they have traced back Michelle Obama's history to slavery. Both her mother and father's side of the family had previously been slaves. A researcher discovered Michelle Obama's ancestors on a property list, they even discovered will wich left one of her (grandmothers?) to another owner. The women was forced to up and leave where she was previously living to go with her new owner.
Hearing about Michelle's history really makes you think about how far our world has come, even though there is still much progress to be made. To think if thinks have not changed she would have never been a first lady, nor would she have accomplished all she has in her personal life. If we had not seeked change she could have still been in slavery. The progress she has personally made serves as a reminder and pusher for change.

That is a pretty good point. Being able to see where her family has been and where she is now, in spite of that. It does show that things have changed and are somewhat different. It makes me think how lucky I am to have been born now, and not back even 50/60 years ago. Things are definately looking up, and if they stay up, maybe we will get to someday see humans treating each other like humans.
ReplyDeleteExactly. I mean this could have been only what 125 years ago?I mean there are countries with sidewalks older than that. Sometimes stories like these make you take a step back and despite the issues we still have, look a the progress we have made in 50 or 60 years. It's pretty remarkable.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard this story, but things like this really do put everything into perspective and make you think about how far our country has come in a matter of decades, which is really amazing.
