Underserved Minorities in Schools
So the other day I went to a meeting for future teachers and we had a guest speaker. The speaker was discussing how one of the ways America has failed its students is through inclusion. All grades from early childhood through college are struggling to create an environment that is optimal for the learning of all students. We constantly gear education towards a certain group and fail to accomadate those who may come from a different background or home than most of the class. Anyways it was an interesting speech and I learned a lot for my future classroom. But I wanted to know what you all thought about this? Do you feel that schools and teachers do a good job to accomadate the various needs in there classroom such as various minorities or students that do not come from teh status quo? What do you think should be done?

Well I can only speak about public schools because that's where I went. I should also mentioned for disclaimer purposes that I am a white male. I always felt that my school was fairly balanced as far as accomodating various needs in the classroom. To be honest at times I felt that the school gave certain groups a little too much accomodation where it almost seemed to go into the realm of favoritism. I think that it is an important issue for people to take note of but I also think that it is important to almost treat it like it doesn't exist. I think ideally that the best way to go about it is to simply do things straight across the board nobody gets any more or less treatment than anybody else. Sometimes I think that the special accomodations are counter-productive as while they are good intentioned they end up becoming a parody of themselves.
ReplyDeleteI went to public schools in a very diverse city, and based on my experiences, I think that everyone seemed to have equal opportunities in school. People were grouped based on academic level so that they would be taught at the appropriate pace. There didn't seem to be any favoritism based on race or culture.
ReplyDeleteIn high school I never got the impression that any particular race got any special privilages... I always assume that people get what they want to out of their education.
ReplyDeleteYeah at Brockton High no race got special privileges. Whatever any kid wants to get out of their education they will, just like Megan said. I definitely agree 100%.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure this tupe of thing happens, but have never experienced it myself. For all I know, minorities in the classroom dont need anything different that anyone else might need. All we need is a good education system. If you have a learning disability or something along those lines then I understand if you need something different then others. But how does being a minority mean you need special treatment?
