House of Pain
So I am probably one of the last people on Earth who just started watching Tyler Perry's House of Pain. But has I was watching the show my boyfriend told me something intersting about Perry. He went from being homeless to living in a $5 million dollar mansion since the creation of his show. However, I found the messages his show portrayed to be a bit controversial. While I personally enjoy his work, it is full of black stereotypes. It is also interesting that there are no prominent figures in the show as far as I can tell. Considering his background one would think that he would want to go against the stereotypes and in someway portray something positive in the show. But then again it could just be me, because like I said I just started watching it.

I haven't watched House of Pain either, if it makes you feel any better. I have however watched some of his Madea movies, and though he puts family and religion at the center, there are black stereotypes in his movies too. I think his focus on love, spirituality and family certainly prevail over those stereotypes but they are still apparent. But he has also addressed problems in urban areas for black people as well. Though there are stereotypes, they are few enough of them for it not to be the sole focus. This might not be the case for the television show, though, but just for the movies. Like I said, I've never seen the show. How frequent are the stereotypes?
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched it at all. I just don't really find him funny and I feel all of his shows and movies are basically the exact same thing. It gets really repetitive and pretty boring real quick, at least in my humble opinion.
ReplyDeleteI must say that I have never watched anything produced my Tyler Perry. I used to work at Blockbuster and as such was inidated with his work. He produced a slew of indepedant features that are now being re-made as studio pictures ie the Madea movies. I can attest to their quality because I've never seen them, however they must be good simply becuase of their populairty. I can't see myself watching those movies anytime soon simply due to the fact that I can stop hearing about them, it's kind of a turn off. Maybe eventually...
ReplyDeleteDiary of a Mad Black woman is a really good movie. If you're gunna spend time on one of these Tyler Perry movies, I recommend that one. It's more about being a strong black woman, and Madea is really only there to provide comic relief.
ReplyDeletei have a few friends who went from broke to rich in a short period of time, thanks to the poker world, and they are totally different from those in the world that are "old money".
